Inverting the Role

Inverting the Pyramid told the history of formations. This series tells the history of roles — the specific tactical jobs that players do within those formations, and how a single innovator can reimagine what a position means.

The Arc

  1. The Birth of Roles (pre-1960s) — roles defined by formation, unnamed, unexamined
  2. The Liberation (1960s-1990s) — coaches separate role from position
  3. The Taxonomy (2000s-present) — roles so specialized that a single position contains five different jobs
